Introduction

Skype is a free Internet telephony service that you can use to make voice and video calls. Skype has been downloaded more than a billion times, making it one of the most widely used applications in the world. It’s also very easy to use: all you need is an Internet connection and a microphone (or webcam) on your computer. You can even use your cell phone if you have Wi-Fi access or want to use SkypeOut, which allows users to make calls from their phones using Skype credits instead of airtime minutes.

Setting Up Skype

Download Skype

You’ll need to download the app in order to use it on your device, so go ahead and grab it from the iTunes store or Google Play depending on which platform you use. Once downloaded, follow the prompts for installation and then open up Skype!

Create an account

Once you’re in Skype for the first time, tap “Create Account” at the bottom of your screen (or click here) to get started with creating an account by entering a new email address that isn’t already associated with another service like Gmail or Hotmail (you can also add mobile number if you have one). Then choose whether or not this will be your primary contact info—remember: everyone needs their own unique username/password combination so we recommend using something simple but memorable like “password123456” rather than sharing one between multiple people)

Downloading the Skype Software

The first step to using Skype is downloading its software from the App Store. Just search “Skype” and install it, then sign in with your account information once you open it for the first time.

Installing Skype

Connect your computer to the internet.
Download the Skype software from www.skype.com/en/download-skype/.
Install the downloaded software on your computer by double-clicking on its icon or clicking through the installer wizard until you reach “Finish” and click it when asked if you would like to run Skype – this will open up a new window with a sign in form in it, where you can enter your email address (if you haven’t already created an account) and password, as well as fill out some other details like your name and country of residence; once everything is filled out correctly and submitted, you’ll be taken directly into Skype itself!

Creating a New Account in Skype

Enter your first name, last name and username (e.g., John_Doe)
Enter your birthday
Enter your phone number
Verify your phone number by entering a special code which will be sent to you via text message

Signing In and out of Skype

The first time you sign in, your name and bio will be automatically filled out, but you can edit these at any time. After signing in, click on the “Me” icon above your profile picture to access your settings:

Here, you can change your display name or bio by clicking on them and updating them with whatever text you want to appear next time someone sees them. You can also change which music plays when people call or chat with you by clicking “Change ringtone” from within this menu. It’s important to note that whatever sound effect or song plays for others won’t play for yourself—it won’t be audible through the program itself—so keep that in mind when choosing something entertaining!

Making a Video Call to Another Person in Skype

When you want to talk face-to-face with someone, click the video call button. Then select the contact you want to call and click the video call button.

Skype will ring on their phone; they’ll answer it, and you’ll see them in a window. You can start talking!

The other person’s microphone is muted unless they push a button on their screen or say something into their microphone—”Hey!”—and then all of your microphones are turned on by default for 30 seconds (to prevent accidental noise). If someone wants to mute their mic again, they just need to hit that same button again for 30 seconds more.

Sending an Instant Message in Skype

Click on the plus sign at the bottom of your screen, located to the left of where you are typing.
Type in the name of the person you’d like to message, then click Send (or hit Enter).

Making a Voice Call in Skype from the Contacts List

Click on the contact you wish to call.
Click on the phone icon, located at the top right-hand side of your screen.
Enter the phone number of who you are calling and click “Call” at the bottom right corner of your screen.

Adding People to Your Contact List in Skype

Once you’ve added all your contacts, it’s time to start calling them. To do this, click the contact in your list and then click Call. You can also call a contact by typing their Skype name into the search bar in your chat window and clicking on them when they appear in search results.

If you want to add people who don’t have Skype accounts yet or if you want to add one of these people as a friend, just type their email address into the box below “Add contacts by name” (under Connecting) and hit Enter or Return on your keyboard. This will automatically generate an invitation for them so they can join Skype with an account of their own!
